Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one on the multiple therapies used in Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine needles at various carefully selected points throughout the body. Acupuncture has a dynamic effect on the body, activating many different systems to promote healing and achieve homeostasis.

How does it work?
Classical Chinese medical theory believes that the body is made up multiple channels, called meridians, that allow energy (qi) to flow and nourish essential organ systems and tissues. When the flow of qi is blocked or impeded, disease and illness arise. Acupuncture works by adjusting the flow of qi in the body to restore balance and good health.

Although modern science has not yet been able to fully explain how acupuncture works, there has been good research showing that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, brain, and spinal cord. These chemicals either modulate pain or trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence changes in the body.

Is Acupuncture painful?
Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible, about the size of a human hair. In most cases, there is no discomfort with the insertion of the needle. In fact, most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing and often doze off during the treatment.

Is Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe, with little or no side effects. All of the needles are sterile, disposable, and FDA approved. A licensed acupuncturist has extensive training in proper safety techniques.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on the nature of the complaint, it's severity, and duration. Often, simple and acute conditions respond very quickly to acupuncture while more severe and chronic conditions require a longer course of treatment over time.
